Nationwide Shared Parenting Update
The first two month’s of 2006 have been extremely busy for Shared Parenting advocates around the country. We are pleased to report the initiatives and bills listed below all contain provisions for establishing equal time sharing as the preference in custody cases.Â
North Dakota Shared Parenting Initiative
The North Dakota Coalition for Families and Children, ACFC’s North Dakota affiliate, recently had the language for its Shared Parenting Initiative approved by the Secretary of State and Attorney General. Just under 13,000 signatures are necessary to place the initiative on the November ballot. The initiative is generating tremendous statewide attention and publicity less than a week after its introduction. A website, http://www.ndspi.com/,  has been established to provide information for this endeavor. On the site you will find the initiative language and several articles. If you are in North Dakota and can assist with the effort contact Mitch Sanderson at 701 331-0410.
ACFC affiliate, The Coalition for Fathers & Families, NY (F&FNY)is working to see bill A330 through the Children and Families Committee of the legislature. This bill has bipartisan support (shouldn’t that always be the case) but needs your assistance to encourage undecided committee members to vote in favor of passing the bill to the House floor for a vote. A330 will establish a preference for a presumptive equal physical time share with the kids in the event of divorce. The bill is scheduled for consideration and vote by the committee during the month of March, take action today.
Everyone can send a message urging support for Shared Parenting.  Click here for the text of the bill.   To TAKE ACTION click here.  For additional information check the Coalition for Fathers & Families website at http://www.fafny.org/.
Dad and Moms of Michigan, an ACFC affiliate, is working with other Michigan based Shared Parenting organizations to pass HB5267. Dads and Moms of Michigan has put together a good resource page on the bill and Shared Parenting which can be viewed by clicking here.
Tim O’Brien recently wrote a guest editorial concerning the bill which appeared in the Detroit Free Press. Read it here.
If you’re in Michigan and would like to assist with this effort contact Jim Semerad at Dads and Moms of Michigan through their website http://www.dadsofmichigan.org/
An excellent shared parenting bill was introduced several weeks ago in West Virginia at the urging of ACFC affiliate M.A.D. (Men Against Discrimination) of WV. This bill was introduced in the House and an exact companion bill was also filed in the Senate. The initial bill had five sponsors in each chamber. This bill has been referred to the judiciary committee for consideration. Read the bill here.
There are many other Shared Parenting activities underway around the nation. We will highlight those in future emails. Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Iowa, South Dakota and several others have been working legislation recently. Momentum for Shared Parenting continues growing nationwide.
Robert Seidenberg, a long time activist and author of the book “Fathers Emergency Guide to Divorce – Custody Battle” had commentary on the negative effects of Guardian Ad Litems in custody cases published by the Washington Times. This is a great education piece, read it here and pass it on to others.
We’ll be back with more soon. Thanks to all of you who are actively engaged in family law reform efforts.
