News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | HEADLINES | Hurricane Rita victims still pay, collect child support

Interesting: I wonder how they are supposed to pay with their lives completely turned upside down. Should be interesting to see how this works out.

People displaced, or otherwise affected, by Hurricane Rita and have child support questions can contact the Texas attorney general’s office.

Attorney General Greg Abbott announced Thursday he had set up a toll-free hotline.

He urged parents in the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange and nearby areas to call (866) 291-6604 to ask about receiving their child support payments.

Operators will accept updated addresses for mailing out those child support payments.

Mail delivery to the area damaged by Rita has been affected. More details are available on the agency’s Web site.

Parents who pay child support can call (800) 252-8014 to hear automated information about their cases.

In Sourth Florida, a newscast interviewed a mother who complained that she was unable to get child support from the father, who was a Katrina evacuee. He was turned down by FEMA and other agencies, because he was not the custodial parent and the children didn’t live with him. Louisiana said he should pay his child support from any unemployment money he was receiving. The mother acknowledged that he couldn’t pay anything from the $250 he was getting from unemployment. She pointed out how unfair it was that only custodial parents get money to support their kids, even though the father was legally responsible for support. It was also unfair to her and the children, since that jeopardized their ability to meet their rent, food, and financial obligations.

I don’t know how any custodial parent can complain that they are not getting the support from the NCP after he/she lost everything in the wake of hurricane Rita. Why don’t the local gov’t let the NCP alone while he gets his life back in order? How come the CP can get their life back on track with the NCP’s money and all that does is slow him down by getting on his feet? But then again, by the time he gets on his feet I am sure he will be put in jail for back support. I feel sorry for the NCP’s in that situation of Rita. We all heard about racism in Rita’s wake, what about the men who will go to jail for back support. What about them too getting theor life on the right track again? Where’s the fairness? I am an NCP and I feel like a breed that will die off soon, a loving father that strives to be one but only is allowed to visit now. I feel for the children in these cases. God bless them all.
